If you have arrived on this article you have probably settled in Monaco, you have already spent several months or even years in our beautiful Principality and know the steps to apply for Monegasque residency. You are probably aware that all foreign residents must ensure that they renew their residence permit before it expires in order to maintain their status as legal residents in the Principality. An expired or outdated residence permit (also known as a residence permit) can lead to administrative complications or even the loss of the right to reside in Monaco. It is therefore essential to anticipate this deadline in order to remain in compliance with Monegasque requirements.
At Petrini Exclusive Real Estate Monaco, we make it a point of honour to accompany our clients in all their procedures, including the renewal of the residence permit. Our website serves as a reference platform for real estate and administrative matters in the Principality, providing practical guides at every stage of your project. In particular, we have developed resources on the conditions for living in Monaco, the difference between residence and Monegasque nationality, and the procedures for becoming a resident outside the European Union. This guide focuses exclusively on how to renew your Monegasque residence permit, here is the procedure to follow.
Monaco issues different types of residence permits depending on the length of residence and the applicant's profile. Each has a specific validity and specific renewal procedures. Here are the main Monegasque resident cards and what you need to know about their duration and renewal:
Temporary Resident Card – valid for 1 year, renewable annually (up to a maximum of 3 consecutive years).
Ordinary Resident Card – valid for 3 years, renewable once (3 additional years).
Privileged Resident Card – valid for 10 years, renewable indefinitely every 10 years.
Monegasque spouse's card – valid for 5 years, renewable as long as the marriage remains valid.
Special cards – variable durations depending on the status, renewals subject to the particular criteria of the title (to be assessed on a case-by-case basis).
Each time you move to a higher category (from temporary to ordinary, then to privileged) requires you to meet the conditions and formalities of the new card, but this is a continuation of your journey as a resident.
Once you have your residence permit in hand, it is important to keep it up to date. This involves not only renewing it as it approaches its expiry, but also asking for a replacement in case of loss or theft, or having it modified if your personal situation changes (marriage, change of address, etc.). Here are the different steps you need to know to stay in order with your Monegasque residence permit.
Steps for renewal :
Prepare the required documents: The renewal process is similar to that of the first application, with some simplifications. You will need to gather several recent supporting documents to support your application:
A copy of your current residence permit (the one that is about to expire).
A valid identity document (passport or national identity card).
Up-to-date proof of accommodation in Monaco: for example, your new lease contract or a certificate of ownership if you have moved, or failing that, a recent certificate of accommodation if you are staying with a third party.
Proof of up-to-date financial resources or activity: this can be your last pay slip if you are employed, a certificate of professional activity if you are working (or a copy of your work permit), or a Monegasque bank certificate proving sufficient funds if you are not gainfully employed. The idea is to show that you still have a means of existence that meet the requirements.
If necessary, an extract from the criminal record of less than three months may be requested (especially for new residents or if the Public Security wishes to update your character file). Unless specifically requested, this document is generally not required for each regular renewal if your situation has not changed.
A signed affidavit confirming that you meet the conditions and providing the requested information in good faith. A template is available from the Residents' Section or on the Monegasque government website.
Submit the renewal application: You have two options:
By electronic means : Monaco has set up an online online service for the renewal of residence permits, via the MonGuichet.mc platform. This convenient service allows you to submit your application digitally, provided you have previously created an online account. You upload the scanned supporting documents and fill in the dematerialized form. Once the application has been submitted, it will be examined by the Residents' Section.
Paper : If you prefer the traditional method or have difficulty with digital technology, you can pick up the single renewal form (available at the Residents' Section or downloaded). It must be completed and signed, then deposited with the copies of the required documents either directly at the counter of the Residents' Section (9 rue Suffren-Reymond, Monaco), or sent by post to the same address. The paper form also covers cases of change of situation and duplicates, which simplifies administrative procedures.
Payment and collection of the new card: After examining your file and once the renewal has been approved, you will be informed (by email or post) of the procedures for collecting your new residence permit. Recently, appointments for collection can be made online via a link provided by the administration. Removal is done in person at the Residents' Section offices, as it usually includes fingerprinting and verification of certain items. When you surrender the card, you will have to pay the issuance fee (administrative fee) corresponding to your type of card. For example, at the time of writing this guide, the cost of a renewal is €40 for a temporary card, €50 for an ordinary card, €60 for a privileged card and €40 for a Monegasque spouse card. These amounts are set by ministerial decree and may change.
Activation of the digital identity (optional): The new generation of Monegasque residence permits is equipped with an electronic chip to activate a sovereign digital identity. If you wish, you can request the activation of your digital identity when you collect the card (or later on a dedicated terminal). This feature opens up access to many secure online services in the Principality. Activating it is not mandatory, but is an additional advantage of the new card format.
Typically, the renewal process is quite smooth if your circumstances have not changed significantly since you first obtained the designation. By anticipating the deadline and providing a complete file, you should receive your new card without difficulty and continue your residence in Monaco with complete peace of mind. It should be remembered that it is essential to respect the conditions of stay (accommodation, resources, etc.) not only to obtain but also to keep one's card: otherwise, the authorities reserve the right to refuse a renewal or to withdraw a valid permit.
