Electric charging stations in Monaco: Monaco ON

Monaco's Electric Charging Station Network: Expanding Green Mobility

Electric charging stations in Monaco: Monaco ON

At the heart of Monaco's splendour, a discreet but crucial change is underway: electric mobility. With a resolutely forward-looking vision and a keen awareness of environmental issues, the Principality of Monaco has undertaken to build an innovative network of electric charging stations, meeting the growing needs of drivers of electric and hybrid vehicles. This network, called Monaco ON, is the spearhead of a transition to cleaner mobility on the Rock.

Many people choose to move to Monaco, attracted by its climate, safety and thriving economy. Before taking the plunge, it is essential to be familiar with the conditions for living in Monaco, a key point in preparing your life project in the Principality with peace of mind.

The process for becoming a Monegasque resident varies depending on whether you are a European citizen or not; those living outside the European Union will find valuable information on the procedure in the guide how to apply outside Europe.

To fully understand what makes the Rock so unique, it is exciting to delve into everything you need to know about the Principality of Monaco, such as its surprisingly small size, the reasons why Monaco is known, or the haunting history of the Rock of Monaco. The rich history mixes with the fascinating stories of the princes of Monaco and emblematic figures such as Charlene of Monaco.

Finally, to make everyday life easier, the Principality offers many services detailed in the services and practical life in Monaco section, whether it is to choose from the list of international schools in Monaco or to discover the new Princess Grace Hospital Centre, which guarantees a modern and efficient healthcare offer.

Monaco ON: The Smart Grid

Example of Monaco ON charging stations, recognisable by their yellow colour, installed in the Principality's car parks and roads.

Monaco ON is not just a simple charging network – it is a smart network that covers the entire Monegasque territory. Initially, it offered more than 300 charging stations spread over 13 charging zones, covering strategic districts ranging from Fontvieille to La Condamine, via Monte-Carlo and Larvotto. The stations are ideally located near high-traffic areas (shops, business centres, tourist sites), which facilitates access for drivers concerned about their ecological footprint. They are also completely free to use – a remarkable aspect that reflects Monaco's commitment to a sustainable future. The YourMonaco mobile application acts as a virtual guide: it offers a complete map of the network by indicating the number of charging stations, their availability in real time, the type of sockets and even their power. Thanks to this tool, users can locate a free station adapted to their vehicle at a glance, making electromobility easier and more incentivising.

Today, the Monaco ON network has expanded dramatically to keep up with the growing demand. The Principality now has around 650 freely accessible charging points on its soil, more than double the number of charging stations available just two years ago. This increase in power illustrates Monaco's desire to anticipate the growth of the electric vehicle fleet and to avoid any bottlenecks in terms of charging infrastructure.

Convenience and free of charge

Monaco's commitment to green mobility is reflected not only in the extent of its network of charging stations, but also in its practicality of use. Monaco ON stations are dedicated to charging, which means that no complicated handling is necessary: all you have to do is plug in the vehicle, without having to take out any subscription beforehand. One of the most remarkable aspects of this initiative is that charging is completely free for the user. Charging your vehicle does not cost a cent in the Principality – a strong approach that encourages drivers to opt for electric vehicles easily and at no additional cost.

The YourMonaco application, for its part, provides additional comfort by centralising all the useful information: location of charging stations, total number and real-time availability, types of connectors (Type 2 plug, CCS, etc.) and supported charging power. Planning your charging stops becomes child's play: for example, it is possible to select a favorite station and find it instantly, or to filter the stations according to the desired power to optimize the charging time.

As such, the new terminals deployed are more efficient than the old self-service sockets they replace. They have accelerated charging capabilities, allowing for example to recover about 30 to 200 km of range in just 30 minutes of charging depending on the type of charging station and vehicle. It is therefore quite possible to recharge during a shopping session or during an appointment, without excessive time constraints. By making charging easy, fast and free of charge, Monaco ON is removing the obstacles to the mass adoption of electric vehicles one by one.

Concrete benefits

The transition to electric mobility in Monaco is not just about technology, it is part of a global vision of a sustainable future. The efforts undertaken are bearing fruit: nearly 20 % of vehicles registered in the Principality are now low-emission vehicles (electric or hybrid), i.e. more than 9,000 vehicles in total. By comparison, they were only 6 % in 2019. This significant leap forward testifies to a real transformation of the Monegasque car fleet. Each transition from a combustion engine vehicle to an electric or hybrid vehicle results in an immediate reduction in noise and pollutants emitted into the urban atmosphere. Indeed, these " clean " vehicles emit no engine noise, no local pollution, and no greenhouse gases in operation, which are particularly appreciable in a dense urban environment like Monaco. In addition to the environmental aspect, driving electric brings increased driving pleasure: smooth acceleration, quiet operation, and sound comfort contribute to a more pleasant experience for drivers and local residents alike.

The success of the Monaco ON network concretely reinforces these benefits. The number of charging times carried out continues to increase, proof that users are taking full ownership of the infrastructure. This has increased from around 120,000 charges carried out across the network in 2021 to nearly 281,000 charges in 2024. This intensive use shows that the terminals meet a real and growing need. In terms of energy, this represents about 3,700  MWh of electricity delivered in 2024 alone – the equivalent of 23 million kilometres travelled by electric vehicles, and thus about 3,500 tons of CO₂ that were not emitted into the atmosphere thanks to electric mobility that year. These tangible figures illustrate the concrete positive impact of the deployment of the stations: each charging carried out in Monaco is one less tank of fossil fuel, and an additional contribution to the fight against climate change.

A promising future in Monaco

The Monaco ON network is constantly evolving, demonstrating the Principality's ongoing commitment to greener and innovative mobility. New, ever more efficient charging stations continue to be installed and the network of the territory is constantly becoming denser. In 2021, the Monaco ON programme started by ensuring that a first public charging point was available within 300 m of each resident. Since then, distances have been further reduced : today, every Monegasque is less than 200 metres from a public charging station, a guarantee of optimal accessibility. The latest installations have targeted previously underserved areas – for example near new shops or in neighbourhoods that are usually deprived – so that no one is left out. The result is a very tight network of the territory, where it becomes almost impossible not to find a charging station within a few minutes' walk.

The Prince's Government is thus continuing its efforts to expand the network to support the growth of the electricity fleet. By mid-2023, there were already around 400 Monaco ON charging stations scattered throughout the country (roads and car parks combined). In 2024, this figure has jumped to about 650 charging stations in service, illustrating an impressive increase in the space of just a few years. The opening of the brand new Parking des Salines is an emblematic example: inaugurated in 2024 in the Jardin Exotique district, this car park at the western entrance to the city added 100 Monaco ON charging sockets alone when it was commissioned. What's more, these additional charging stations benefit both motorists and electric two-wheelers, with spaces dedicated to electric motorcycles provided in this latest-generation car park.

Monaco's ultimate goal is to create an environment where sustainable mobility becomes the norm rather than the exception. The proliferation of high-performance charging infrastructures and their strategic positioning ensure that the transition to electric vehicles is not only feasible, but also attractive for drivers on a daily basis. The Monegasque authorities are also ensuring that this transition takes place under the best possible conditions: they are calling on users to adopt responsible behaviour by freeing up the space once the battery has been sufficiently recharged, thus avoiding what is nicknamed " suction cup cars" unduly occupying the stations. Thanks to this encouraged civic-mindedness – and if necessary, controlled by fines in the event of abuse – everyone can find an available terminal more easily, maximising the turnover rate at the stations and therefore the number of vehicles served per day.

Monaco is thus positioning itself as a true pioneer in electric mobility, showing that it is possible to combine the luxury and standing of Monegasque life with a resolutely sustainable approach. As a reminder, the Principality has been actively supporting electromobility for three decades now: as early as 1994, the Monegasque Government launched avant-garde incentives (bonus for the purchase of electric vehicles, free on-street parking, etc.). Reduced subscription in public car parks, exemption from the annual sticker, etc.) to encourage its residents to adopt cleaner transportation. Today, the success of the Monaco ON programme and the steady rise of electric vehicles on the streets of the Principality show that this vision has become a daily reality. The entire Monegasque ecosystem – from users to infrastructure managers – is now converging towards a greener horizon, proving to the world that even a state synonymous with luxury can be at the forefront of sustainable development.

Among the multitude of equipped spaces, we can mention (but are not limited to) a few public car parks with Monaco ON charging stations:

  • Parking Saint-Laurent, Av. Saint-Laurent, 98000 Monaco

  • Parking Centre Commercial de Fontvieille, 29 Av. Albert II, 98000 Monaco

  • Parking du Chemin des Pêcheurs, 4 Av. Saint-Martin, 98000 Monaco

  • Parking des Salines, 99 Bd du Jardin Exotique, 98000 Monaco

In Monaco, electric mobility is much more than a passing trend: it is a booming reality. Monaco ON charging stations offer much more than energy for vehicles – they symbolize a transformation towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. By positioning itself as a pioneer in the field of green mobility, Monaco is showing that it is possible to combine comfort and refinement with environmental responsibility. While the vision of electric mobility is becoming more and more entrenched in travel habits every day, it is an entire way of life in the Principality that is moving towards a much greener and more virtuous horizon.
