On December 5, 2024, Mareterra officially opened its doors to the public, marking a new era for Monaco. This ambitious project, covering 6 hectares reclaimed from the sea and bringing the total area of the Principality to 2.08 km², embodies a modern and ecological vision of urban development. Its inauguration, in the presence of HSH Prince Albert II, Princess Charlene and their children, Crown Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, brought together elected officials and residents to celebrate this emblematic addition to the Principality. Started in 2013, this project represents an investment of around 2 billion euros.
As soon as you enter, Alexander Calder's "Four Spears", created in 1964, seduces with its imposing presence and its frame by three massive walls. This sculpture, acquired by Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace in 1966, symbolises the link between art and nature. Located on the Princess Gabriella esplanade, it reflects Mareterra's cultural and contemporary commitment. Two basins of water face the work, adding a soothing and immersive atmosphere.
Mareterra's development responds to a clear desire: to offer an exceptional living environment. Public spaces are distinguished by attention to detail. Strategically placed benches to admire the sea, fountains to fill water bottles, as well as infrastructures such as Monabike stations and e-scooter racks facilitate a smooth and ecological circulation. With its 19,000 m² of pedestrian spaces and 600 metres of cycle paths, the district greatly favours soft mobility.
When exploring the neighbourhood, Prince Jacques Avenue stands out. With its spectacular views of the Mediterranean, its artistic portholes embedded in the walls and its light concrete enhanced by the surrounding greenery, this space is designed to be as functional as it is aesthetic. Ideal for walks, this avenue offers an immersive view of the Larvoto and Port Hercules, harmoniously linking Monaco's historic districts.
The Pine Forest Valley walk offers a real sensory journey. An artificial stream, starting from the belvedere, winds gracefully to the sea, following the curves of the land. The recycled water is a reminder of the ecological efforts made in this eco-district. This design perfectly illustrates the name Mareterra, the sea, the water and the land reclaimed from the sea. This space is embellished with waterfalls and small waves created by the wind, adding a Zen and soothing dimension to the visit. Especially since the Pine Valley walk runs along the Japanese gardens.
Although widely accessible to the public, some places such as la Grotte Bleue and the Meditation Space are reserved for residents of the "Les Jardins d'eau" buildings. These private spaces, designed for well-being and tranquillity, enhance the inherent luxury of Mareterra. The private villas, 11 in number, each have a surface area of around 2,000 m², embodying the pinnacle of prestigious real estate in the Principality. The public cannot see the apartments or villas, so residents are protected. No embarrassing vis-à-vis.
With 800 trees planted on a 27,000 m² plant cover, Mareterra is a model in terms of sustainable development. The use of solar panels covering 4,500 m², rainwater management systems and infrastructure for soft mobility illustrate the ecological ambition of this project. These efforts align with Monaco's goal to become carbon neutral by 2050.
Located on the seafront, the Princess Charlene swimming pool, surrounded by water and almost seeming to float, is a major point of attraction. Although its public accessibility is yet to be confirmed, it adds a spectacular touch to the architectural ensemble of Mareterra. Its design, integrated into the natural setting, makes it an exceptional place to keep an eye on.
Mareterra Monaco is a space that impresses with its balance between modernity and respect for the environment. During our visit, we were struck by how every detail seemed to be designed for the comfort of visitors. The water basins, green spaces and perspectives open to the sea create a rare visual and sensory harmony. The dimensions of the promenade and the efforts to maintain ecological integration in this dense urban setting are particularly noteworthy.
However, a few projects in progress remind us that the project is still in full development. But this constant evolution is a testament to the ambition of this district: to become a must-see place, where residents and visitors meet to discover a more sustainable and inclusive Monaco.
